Holiday Weather in the Maldives

Seasons in the Maldives

There are two seasons in the Maldives: the Northeast Monsoon and the Southwest Monsoon. The Northeast Monsoon runs from December to April and the Southwest Monsoon runs from May to November. You should not be deterred by the mention of “monsoon” – it does not necessarily mean you will spend the entire holiday in the rain! Weather in Maldives during the Northeast Monsoon is characterised by dry weather, calm seas and slightly higher temperatures. Weather in Maldives in December is probably the best weather of the year, making weather Maldives Christmas a great time to visit.

The Southwest Monsoon is the time of the year when the most thunderstorms occur and the seas are a bit rougher. Nevertheless, storms often only last for a couple of hours in the afternoon and the rest of the day you are able to enjoy your holiday as normal, so you shouldn’t be discouraged from visiting by the weather in Maldives in July. In fact, you will find that for scuba divers, some areas of the Maldives are better visited during these months, while others are better during the other months.

Since many of us take our annual leave during the European summer, we don’t have the opportunity to enjoy the weather in January in Maldives, and instead we have to visit between June and September, which is part of the Southwest Monsoon season. Thousands of people visit the Maldives during these months, and generally experience great July weather in Maldives, save for the occasional downpour. Besides, these tropical rains can be quite exciting and are quite something to see, so if you’ve never experienced them, you’ll probably enjoy them. A quick look at the Maldives travel forums will tell you that Maldives July weather is somewhat unpredictable and while the historical records for Maldives weather May indicate that weather during these months is supposed to be quite bad, many people spend two or three weeks here at this time without seeing a drop of rain.

Maldives weather June is lovely and warm but there will be some waves in the ocean and you may have a few rainstorms during your stay. If you like surfing, the Maldives weather in July is ideal. In fact, the weather in Maldives in May, June, July and August is ideal for surfers as the swells will be at their highest.

Scuba Diving Weather in the Maldives

One of the most popular activities in the Maldives is scuba diving and naturally, they want to know when the best time for Maldives weather diving is. Maldives dive weather is undoubtedly at its best during the Northeast Monsoon season (from November to January), when there is a lot of sun, little wind and no rain, all of which factors lend themselves to excellent underwater visibility. Maldives weather seasons cause differences in the marine life you are likely to see while scuba diving, and the part of the Maldives where you will find various species. For example, if you’re hoping to see some whale sharks during your trip to the Maldives, judging the monsoon weather Maldives will be an important part of your trip planning.

Maldives weather in November, at the beginning of the Northeast Monsoon season, makes scuba diving best on the eastern side of the Maldives, where the currents from the northeast attract large numbers of whale sharks, grey reef sharks and some large pelagic species. This will remain the case until the Maldives weather in January begins to change to make way for the Southwest Monsoon season.

The weather in Maldives in April, in the height of the Southwest Monsoon season will see more diving action in the western parts of the Maldives, where the manta rays and whale sharks will be gathering. Maldives weather in May, June and July, August and September will remain the same, and while there is typically less visibility during these months throughout the country, there is still a lot of action – mainly with reef sharks and jacks among the normal schools of colourful fish – on the eastern side of the islands, and diving trips are operated throughout these months despite not being the ideal Maldives weather for diving.
